The American Pavilion's Venice Biennale exhibit (including the 7-foot tall Bandshell super-graphic) will be shown at Parson's in New York City in March!
At the 2008 Venice Biennale
This year, I was fortunate enough to fall into cahoots with San Francisco's infamous and beloved Rebar collective, and as a result found my largest-ever illustration piece displayed in the prestitious Biennale di Venezia: "Out There: Architecture Beyond Building."
The Panhandle Bandshell project was selected for the American Pavilion, but size and restrictions and shipping concerns prevented the actual full-size bandshell from being shown. The solution was to create a documentary super-graphic, demonstrating the building process of constructing a temporary public performance space entirely from recycled materials. The graphic shows how physical components were re-directed from the waste stream, but also includes depictions of community involvement, text from hundreds of emails, and an illustration of the bandshell on opening day. The finished 7-foot square graphic was printed on silk and shown with the corresponding video.
We were in good company in the American Pavilion's Positioning Practice exhibit, which showcased 15 other visionary American groups who use their profession to advance social change, including The Edible Schoolyard and Teddy Cruz.
